Often described as one of the most spectacular drives in the Canary Islands, the Masca Road (TF-436) winds through the rugged Teno Mountains on the island of Tenerife. Carved into steep cliffs, the road is filled with sharp hairpin turns, dramatic drops, and sweeping views that make the journey as memorable as the destination.

Traditional Sports of the Canary Islands

October 20th, 2025

The Canary Islands keep their past alive through sports that blend strength, skill, and culture.

Lucha Canaria (Canarian Wrestling): A centuries-old wrestling style from the Guanche people, fought barefoot in a sand circle — still central to island festivals today.

Juego del Palo (Stick-Fighting): A fast, choreographed duel with wooden staffs, descended from shepherd traditions and practiced across the islands.

Salto del Pastor (Shepherd’s Leap): Once a herder’s tool, now a sport — athletes vault ravines with long poles in spectacular displays of agility.

Bola Canaria: A local take on boules, played on volcanic sand and passed down through generations.

These games aren’t museum pieces — they’re taught in schools and celebrated at fiestas, keeping Canarian identity active and alive.

Los Isleños Museum: Preserving Spanish Colonial Heritage

September 4, 2025

Established in 1980, the Los Isleños Museum and Cultural Center in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana, preserves the history and culture of the Isleños, Canary Islander settlers who arrived between 1778 and 1783 to help defend Louisiana.

The museum was founded by historian Frank Michael Fernández Jr., whose efforts led to the creation of the Los Isleños Heritage and Cultural Society in 1976. The society restored historic buildings, including a Creole cottage from around 1840, donated in memory of the Molero family.

Today, the museum complex spans 22 acres and features nine structures, including the Estopinal House built around 1790 and a replica trapper’s cabin, showcasing Isleño crafts, music, and cuisine.

The museum also hosts La Fiesta de los Isleños each March, celebrating Spanish heritage with performances, traditional foods, and artisan crafts from Louisiana and the Canary Islands.

As a living tribute to Spanish Colonial Louisiana, the Los Isleños Museum continues to preserve and promote the rich legacy of the Isleño community.

The Traditional Dress of the Isleños: A Link to Our Canary Island Roots

August 12, 2025

Traditional Isleño clothing reflects the heritage our ancestors carried from the Canary Islands to Louisiana in the late 1700s. These garments were practical for daily life yet festive for community gatherings, blending European, African, and island influences.

For women, outfits often included long, colorful skirts, aprons, and shawls, with headscarves or straw hats to protect from the sun. Men wore simple linen shirts, wide sashes, and hats, sometimes paired with short jackets or vests. In festivals and performances today, these costumes are still worn as a celebration of Isleño identity.

The clothing tells a story—not just of fashion, but of resilience, adaptation, and pride. By remembering and showcasing these traditional garments, we honor the journey from the Canary Islands to Louisiana and keep our culture alive for future generations.

Canary Islands Face Wildfire Risk Again: A Reminder of Our Shared Roots

July 3, 2025

As the Canary Islands prepare for another intense wildfire season, communities across Tenerife and La Palma are on alert. Drier conditions and rising temperatures have made wildfires a growing threat in recent years.

For Isleños in Louisiana, it’s a distant crisis with personal meaning. Our ancestors left those same volcanic islands generations ago, but the connection remains. Many of us still have family there or feel a deep cultural bond through language, food, and tradition.

These fires remind us of the importance of resilience, community, and caring for the land, values our Isleño ancestors lived by. As we follow the news from abroad, we stand in solidarity with the islands that helped shape who we are today.

Hollywood’s spotlight shines once again on the Canary Islands, with Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz set to film parts of their upcoming movie Day Drinker in the archipelago.

The archipelago continues to captivate filmmakers with its diverse landscapes and attractive incentives through the Canary Islands Special Zone (ZEC), making it a prime location for international productions. The islands have previously hosted A-listers such as Liam Neeson, Demi Moore, Sylvester Stallone, Gerard Butler, Marion Cotillard, and Christian Bale. The addition of Depp and Cruz only reinforces its reputation as a global filming hotspot.

The movie is being produced by Lionsgate, with local production support from Nostromo. It is expected to blend stunning visuals with a compelling narrative, with much of the action taking advantage of the Canary Islands' unique scenery.

3D-Printed House Technology Thriving in The Canaries

October 7, 2024

The Canary Islands are witnessing a breakthrough in housing construction as 3D-printed homes have made their debut in the archipelago. According to a report by El País, this innovative technology offers a potential solution to the housing crisis by promising faster, more sustainable, and cost-effective construction methods.

Gran Canaria has emerged as a leader in this field, thanks to the Spanish company Evocons, which is pioneering the development of a system that accelerates the building process while reducing environmental impact. Evocons’ technology cuts construction time by up to 70% and reduces costs by 25%, presenting a viable and sustainable alternative to traditional methods.

This initiative marks the beginning of a series of projects that will position the Canary Islands as a frontrunner in advanced construction technology.

The most exclusive restaurant in the Canary Islands

September 6, 2024

The Canary Islands, renowned for their unique landscape shaped by volcanic activity, are home to some of the most extraordinary natural and culinary experiences in Spain. Among these, the El Diablo Restaurant, located in the heart of Timanfaya National Park in Lanzarote, stands out as the most exclusive dining spot in the region.

What sets El Diablo apart is its innovative use of volcanic heat as a central element of its cooking process. Built entirely from basalt stones, formed from previous volcanic eruptions, this outdoor restaurant is famous for its grilled meats and seafood, which are cooked over natural geothermal vents. The temperature from the earth can reach up to 500°C, providing a unique and sustainable way to prepare dishes.

Beyond the impressive culinary techniques, the restaurant embraces traditional Canarian cuisine, offering local delicacies such as papas arrugadas with mojo sauce, all made from locally sourced ingredients. Even the desserts pay homage to the volcanic surroundings, arriving at the table wrapped in an edible ash cone.

The Canary Islands destination that is a picture postcard from the Mediterranean

August 19, 2024

If you've ever dreamed of discovering a hidden corner where nature, the sea, and tranquillity blend in perfect harmony, Tamaduste, a small coastal village on the island of El Hierro, may be the place you've been searching for. Often overlooked by tourists in favour of the larger and more popular Canary Islands, Tamaduste offers an idyllic escape with its relaxed atmosphere, stunning Atlantic views, and a landscape that looks as if it were lifted straight from a Mediterranean postcard. Nestled on the westernmost Canary Island, Tamaduste is surrounded by dramatic volcanic rock formations, this picturesque village presents a striking contrast between the deep blue ocean and the black volcanic terrain. The charming white houses, adorned with colourful doors and windows, evoke the spirit of Mediterranean coastal towns, creating an enchanting and postcard-worthy setting.

Mr. Jesse Alfosno then shared a little more detail on the economy, culture, and language of this unparalleled community - now largely displaced since Hurricane Katrina.
